Tell me you are a Tumblr girly without telling you are a Tumblr girly.
You may or may have not heard about this movie. It has most definitely all over my social media timelines and for you page. If you have seen this movie all over you social media then probably you have heard, or read, people calling a Wattpad story. I also read an article by Time newspaper where they say that “reducing The Idea of You to Fan Fiction is another example of dismissing women’s art.” I have mixed feelings about that statement.
I don’t think being categorized as fanfic it’s demising one’s art. I, instead, believe there are many fanfic stories that deserve to be massively published, some fanfics are better than most books out there! As someone who was raised by fanfics, metaphorically speaking, seeing stories on the screen that resemble fanfics creates a turmoil of emotion in me. I feel hopeful again, naive, and yes, I do feel some cringe, but the cringe is mostly at the memory of 14 year old Veronica, not at the story I’m reading/watching.
I think The Idea of You is the perfect adaptation to a story many would have imagined in 2012 when One Direction debuted. And yes, I think this movie is like a Wattpad story, so what? That’s not an insult, it’s a compliment! I also found out recently the Wattpad has a production company that adaptates books and fanfics into movies, like After. So I would use this blog post for two things, first to start a motion for Wattpad studios to use The Idea of You as the perfect example of how their adaptations should look and feel like. Second, for you to go watch this movie! Feel what I felt 2013 reading “your name” fanfics about me and Harry Styles living happily ever after. Many think this movie is inspired in Harry Styles and Olivia Wild, but do any of the real ones remember Rebecca Ferguson?
